In about a month, Tesla will show the world its pivotal Model 3 all-electric car. It’s the culmination of a decade of design and technology development—all focused on elevating Tesla from a maker of expensive niche luxury vehicles to a legitimate player in the mainstream auto industry. For the first time, the company will try to offer a vehicle in the heart of the auto consumer market, backed by economies of scale from its massive new Nevada battery factory.
On March 31, Tesla will reveal and begin taking reservations for the Model 3, which is slated to begin deliveries in late 2017. The current Model S and Model X required a $2,500 refundable deposit for a reservation, while the Model 3 drops that privilege to $1,000. It’s unknown whether Tesla will reveal an actual car next month or a just a rendering. There’s some speculation that we may see two cars, the Model 3 and the Model Y, which is reportedly a small crossover SUV built on the same platform.
