The unveiling of the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week represents several firsts for the US auto market. The plug-in hybrid minivan is the first plug-in hybrid offering from Chrysler, which has so far only sold the all-electric Fiat 500e in limited markets. The Pacifica will also be the first plug-in minivan, as well as the first hybrid minivan of any kind sold in the United States.
The Pacifica will carry a 16 kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of a reported 30 miles of all-electric range—recharging to full capacity in two hours using a Level 2 240-volt charger. Overall efficiency is projected at 80 MPGe—a huge improvement over modern gas-only minivans, whose combined EPA ratings peak in the mid-20-mpg range. The same 3.6-liter V6 engine found in the non-hybrid Pacifica will be present in the plug-in, but total output will be reduced to 248 horsepower.
